28.02. Working Group Data Center: Energy supply of data centers – an underestimated challenge
Frankfurt, 28.02.2008 – The eco Data Center Working Group on 28th February in Frankfurt am Main focused with the issue of data center power. A presentation of the DB Netz AG offers highlighted a diversified approach to power supply. The presentation placed the “usual” full power supply (payment for a package price for the work and power, similar to households) in relation to structured energy procurement.
The presentations are available for free download here.
Protocol / AGENDA »Especially for large customers, like many data centers, it offers the opportunity to separate the rent for the network infrastructure and the cost of the electricity managed by the representative of the DB Netz AG. When it is then detached the power supply could then be saved even more by stream packets acquired at different times on the exchange. Owing to the diversified procurement into small packages it can then be obtained at a usually lower average price than the initial purchase of its requirements.
Karl-Heinz Steffens of the E-TEC POWER MANAGEMENT GmbH , explicitly presented the advantages and disadvantages of the technology and gave an overview of the expected cost when using different UPS systems. Here, enormous savings depending on the technology used were clearly evident.
Working group leader Patrick Pulvermüller then held the last of the working group introduced the questionnaire created to survey the efficiency of data centers “in Germany”. The results of the questionnaire provide each participant the opportunity to compare their performance with the averages and then take the necessary steps. The eco invites all interested parties to participate in this very interesting benchmarking process. eco members are given a detailed analysis of the results available, which also provides the opportunity for deeper analysis.
Finally, Oliver Thorner, eco Authorised Auditor and Senior Consultant of Alegri International GmbH , reported on the upcoming changes in the Datacenter Star audits. Here there was further need for discussion, in which the working group decided to also introduce a working group that deals with the development of audit metrics. A first working group meeting is planned for March / April.
