29.09. Cologne: eco Congress – roads for tomorrow
Cologne, 29.09.2010 – This year’s eco specialty congress offered four exciting expert panels on the trends and subjects of the Internet economy:
The panel “Dater Center” opened with security adviser Rainer A. H. von zur Mühlen with the provocative presentation subject: “the data center is dead – the data center lives”. He currently plans its 565th data center and reports of its long-time experience in the area. In its opinion, the future was and lies in the flexible rubber/balloon DC. Let this be inflatable to the repurposing/increase, but also reduction capable.
more info »Another trend is the “three field economy” for new buildings and renovations of large data centers. An IT rotation would take place: first of all extension potential with usable spaces/reserve areas within the infrastructure, then Rollout/Rollin, and finally the recovery of upgradable surface during operation.
In the subsequent presentation, Prof. Dr. Matthias Kaiserswerth, Director of the Zurich Research Laboratory IBM, reported on Aquasar. In 2007 IBM developed the draft of the hot water-cooled super computer. The plan emerged in 2009 that IBM and ETH jointly wanted to transfer the project, and since May 2010 the prototype has already been in operation. Cooling is achieved with 60 degrees warm water, the waste heat is further utilised. Aquasar saves 40 percent of electricity because cold air is no longer needed. In addition, they reduce energy costs because heat is reused and the CO2 footprint is significantly less.
In the subsequent panel discussion the following people took part: Dietmar Papenfort of Active Power, Jürgen Kockelmann of European Data Hub SA, Roger Bellof Stulz GmbH and Marc Schaefer, Managing Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Association for Renewable Energy in the Innovation Center for Energy at the TU Berlin. The moderator, Dr. Béla Waldhauser of Global Switch FM opened up with the provocative question “Data Center 3.0 – has the data center had its day?” All participants in the panel discussion answered this clearly “no.” The topic of “outsource or self-operate” was then discussed intensely. Bell, explained that companies in Germany wanted to keep the data center more in house, but outsource the backup. There are different categories of customer, a product and solution would each be adapted to their needs.

Interview: Thomas Strohe, Plusserver AG
Strasbourg, 15.09.2010 – The datadock data center came into being by remodeling a former warehouse in the port area of Strasbourg. The planning phase had already begun in 2007 but it wasn’t until 2009 that the operator PlusServer AG started all the necessary rebuilding measures and construction of the infrastructure. The datadock will be finished and in operation by the summer of 2010.
Amongst other things, its excellent connections – resulting from becoming the thoroughfare for all European IT and Telco lines, as well as its central European position, makes Strasbourg the perfect construction site for an operation of this kind. The data center has an optimal location which guarantees the fastest connections to all European regions, thus enabling PlusServer AG to provide all international customers with high quality services.

PlusServer AG establishes Europe´s most eco-friendly data center – 66 % energy saving in spite of full tier 3 classification
Hürth, Germany, Sept. 1, 2010 After about three years of planning and construction, and an investment of over 17 million euros, PlusServer´s data center “datadock” has now started operations. With the best energy efficiency and particularly low emission values, it currently holds the top position among Europe´s “green” data centers.
The German Internet business association “eco” even attested datadock´s quality twice: it won the eco Award 2010 as the best data center and received the highest possible rating of five stars at Datacenter Star Audit (DCSA).
The data center datadock was built in the Strasbourg port area by converting a former warehouse. Strasbourg stands out owing to its central European position (approximately 300 meters from the German/French border), and the main route for European fiber glass cables runs through this region. Therefore, a perfect connection to Germany, France, throughout Europe, and to the entire world is guaranteed.
read more »Furthermore, it was only possible at this location to realize the innovative and eco-friendly artesian-well cooling principle, which is based on the area´s broad groundwater supplies. This power saving cooling method is an important factor in the low power consumption of datadock. In addition, only state-of-the-art and eco-friendly devices and appliances are used at datadock, which all helps create a positive influence on the energy balance. This is why datadock requires a huge 66 percent less energy than the average data center. This equals savings of 26 million kWh per year at full load, or about 24 million kilograms less CO2 emission, respectively. In order to remove this amount of harmful gas from the atmosphere it would require over 119,000 trees working at full capcity for a whole year!
Besides power efficiency and environmental protection, further aspects were taken into consideration when planning datadock: “We made every effort to realize a comprehensive security and redundancy concept, which ensures the highest possible availability of all data”, assures PlusServer CTO Jochen Berger.
Independent third party certifications show that this effort was not in vain. datadock received five stars in the acknowledged Datacenter Star Audit as one of only seven data centers in Europe. “Based on extensive expert knowledge, eco has developed an evaluation schedule that completely analyses all demands on modern data centers”, explains Andreas Niehaus, Head of IT Operations at PlusServer. “Hence, the certificate is a very important quality distinction for data centers”, he emphasises.
You can find further information about datadock at www.datadock.eu. Next to an interactive virtual tour, there are also many exciting facts about Europe´s greenest data center waiting to be viewed.

The organisation was presented by Dr. Andreas Jabs, eco authorised auditor for the Datacenter Star Audit. In his presentation, he clarified the requirements and the performance assessment items of the certification and stressed the themes to the other speakers that formulated the basis for of the requirements criteria. |

Achim Pfleiderer of Stulz Klimatechnik GmbH discussed closely the thermodynamic elevated factors. He set out, based on a collection of examples: “If I manage to double my ΔT (ie the temperature difference between intake and exhaust temperature before the server behind the server), I halve the required air flow for cooling and save a lot of energy.” |
![]() Download |
Emil Woizenko of Master Guard gave an overview of the basic functionality of uninterrupted power supplies and clarified three operating methods. He emphasised: “The stronger the electric current, smoothed ‘(ie is thus brought into a perfect sine wave), the more loss of energy I have for this expense.” |

After that
Peter Wäsch of Schäfer IT set out ongoing current developments of Server-Rack technology. The general trend at the moment is to accommodate the cooling in the Rackrows. A cooling unit can supply up to four adjacent server racks. This eliminates the need for an expensive raised floor. |

Then the team of Wagner Group demonstrated in an impressive manner a fully functional “Oxy-Reduct” system in the “Wagner Show-Truck”. In this fire protection plant, the idea exists to layer the oxygen content in the air so strongly so that it is no longer possible for a flame to ignite. The air is pressed through a molecular sieve, that extensively separates the nitrogen particles from the oxygen particles. The oxygen reduced air then floats back into the server room. The concentration is selected so that people can still work in the rooms. In the live demonstration in the truck, the participants were given a lighter into the hand. After the oxygen reduction, no flame was able to ignite. |

Interview: Roland Broch, eco e.V.
Cologne, 30.06.2010 – Cloud computing and Green IT have raised the standards for ICT outsourcing firms and data center operators. The Internet association eco has responded to this by relaunching its certification program.
Pironet NDH Datacenter is the first company to be awarded the highest quality rating with the new eco Datacenter Star Audit.
The data center of the outsourcing specialist and provider of cloud computing services received five stars and fulfilled all of the criteria with regard to quality, performance, service, efficiency and security.
Higher power spectrum at data centers
“Performance benchmarks for the operation of data centers have raised considerably in the last five years, since we first conducted the eco Datacenter Star Audit“, explains Roland Broch, Certification Program Manager at the Internet association eco. “The common market capacity rates around 50 percent are no longer up to date. Increasing cost pressure, customer request for demand-oriented IT resources and ecological, sustainable operation methods are forcing professional cloud vendors and data center operators to intelligently apply their resources“, comments Broch. The result is more densely structured IT services, so data centers are now producing a lot more waste heat. Operators must invest in better climate control in order to prevent their high-performance computers from overheating.
Cloud computing is a driver of innovation
Customer-oriented reference models like cloud computing are also increasing the expectations of management and service processes. eco auditors seek to discover whether or not operators have implemented processes which conform to ITIL, ensuring consistently high service quality, even at peak times. “Cloud computing is currently the key driver of innovation in the data center market”, concludes Roland Broch, “to provide IT resources and software services according to customer needs via Internet, vendors must utilise substantially more complex technologies and service processes. We have based the highest rating category of five stars on these new requirements.“
The data center infrastructure of Pironet NDH Datacenter has achieved the highest eco Datacenter Star Audit rating for the second time since 2005. According to a current market comparison study by the Experton Group, the provider of ICT services is one of the leading vendors of cloud services for small- and medium-sized companies. Dr. Clemens Plieth, Managing Director Service Delivery, responsible for all Pironet NDH Datacenter operational services, views the eco testing criteria, which is oriented around the practical needs of companies, as a major strength to his company: “Auditors look very closely at how architecture concepts and processes affect actual use and customer processes. The eco Datacenter Star Audit reflects real market demand.“

02.03. Working Group Data Center: Key Performance Indicator
Frankfurt, 02.03.2010 – The efficiency of a data center in previous years was defined mainly on the PUE (power usage effectiveness). At the last meeting of the data center working group it was identified that a single Key Performance Indicator (KPI), such as the PUE, is not sufficient for the assessment of energy efficiency. For this reason another benchmark should be considered in the first session of the working group in the new year.
The presentations are available for free download here.
AGENDA / Protocol »Dr. Ralph Hintemann, Senior Researcher from Borderstep Institute reported on the challenges for the evaluation of energy and resource efficiency in data centers. Hintemann, on the basis of the process chain of energy production to the processor and the software application, indicated starting points to the improvement of the energy efficiency.
Dr. Georg Riegel, Managing Director of deZem GmbH put the focus in his lecture (“playful search for nobel prize suspicious data center efficiency indicators beyond the PUE”) on increasing efficiency through transparency. Riegel concluded his presentation with a comparative efficiency analysis on the example of a hive.
As the last speaker of the afternoon, Gerhard Leo Buttner from the Design Institute Munich (DIM) presented various KPI’s in comparison. As a good benchmark for the overall efficiency of the evaluation Büttner recommended the CADE (Corporate Average Data Efficiency).
The presentations were followed by a tour through the data center of Databurg GmbH. Managing Director Peter Werner explained the special features of the company with a short presentation.
